Firstly, you should try not to look like a tourist, although this may be difficult. Try not to flaunt your expensive cameras and cellular phones for everyone to see, rather use a bag. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash with you or wearing expensive jewellery or watches, most hotels have personal safes, best advice is to leave them at home.
Don’t walk alone after dark. Take special precautions when venturing into secluded areas, such as, Table Mountain or to the beach at night. During the day these places make for spectacular sightseeing. If you are planning to venture off somewhere always let somebody know where you are going and when you plan to return.
At ATM machines be especially on guard as the machine you use could be targeted by sophisticated con men. Don’t let anyone try and help you. Be aware of people standing too close to you or leaning over to see your PIN code. If possible use a machine inside the bank or an establishment such as a shop. If you do encounter problems seek help from a bank employee or from the staff at your accommodation venue.
You may be approached by street children or beggars during your stay in Cape Town . If you do give them money they will not buy food, instead they'll use it to buy alcohol or glue, which the street children sniff to get high. So if you do feel sorry for them rather buy them something to eat instead. That is kinder to the person, than handing over cash.
When driving in Cape Town , especially in the city centre, keep your windows closed or partially open but not enough to let a robber put their hand through the open window. Do not leave any valuables, such as handbags or cellular phones visible on the seat. Do not speak on your phone whilst the window is open as it could be snatched out of your hand. Note it is illegal to use your phone while driving. Make sure that all the doors are locked at all times. Be especially careful when stopped at traffic lights.
That being said, Cape Town is an amazing city for tourist and holiday maker, you will enjoy your stay. From small guest houses (my recommendation) and B&B to the luxury villas and six star hotels Cape Town accommodation has a large selection to choose from.
You will never be disappointed by the large amount of activities that are available, from scenic drives or driving through the Wine lands, to riding the cable car up Table Mountain . or watching the whales off the coast. Read more about these activities by reading my posts for more information.
